He delivered on those expectations and was soon bossing some of the fastest bowlers in the world in some of the toughest conditions (Remember Perth, 1992?), barely out of his adolescence.He virtually carried the Indian batting on his shoulders through the 90s. Not only that, he provided a magnificent treat for the eye whenever out in the middle. But what really endeared the fans was his conduct on and off the field. He was humble and respectful at all times, never loud, never pompous, no flamboyant manners. He literally embodied the traditional Indian values, and people across the world absolutely adored him for it. He was truly the cynosure of all eyes, for everything that he did.Rahul Dravid walked into the Indian team when the country was already neck deep in its love affair with Tendulkar. Any other player was an after thought. Unlike Tendulkar, there were no grand prophecies for Dravid, and people didn’t imagine then that this man would go on to become one of the greatest cricketers of all time. The fact that Dravid wasn’t as adored as Tendulkar really had little to do with how Dravid played.For Dravid, catching up with Tendulkar, both in terms of records and fans, was akin to running a 100m race after conceding a 40m head start. Also, Dravid took a while to get going in international cricket, especially in the one dayers where he even drew flak for his slow scoring. He finally came in his own 1999 onwards and started raking up some amazing numbers, and winning matches home and abroad. But even then, he was never as attractive a stroke maker as Tendulkar, albeit definitely more effective at times. Overall, it wasn’t difficult to understand why Dravid didn’t attract as many fans as Tendulkar.Meanwhile, Tendulkar’s legend kept growing. He never stopped. He kept redefining batting with his exploits, while Dravid calmly went about his job. By now, the love capital that Tendulkar had accumulated was so huge that it was impossible to surpass by anyone, not even Rahul Dravid. Tendulkar always seemed to catch the eye whenever he performed, while you realized Dravid’s effort only after the day was done. But while Tendulkar held your breath, he still needed the wall around him which Dravid so stoically provided.While people may debate over who the better cricketer, batsman or human being was, there would never be denying the fact that Tendulkar was the more loved of the two. Even the most loved cricketer of all times perhaps. And the reasons were all based on circumstances and perceptions more than their numbers.I, personally, just feel blessed to have witnessed these two play together for India for such a long time.
