Mewar or Mewad is a region in the south-central part of Rajasthan state of India. It includes the present-day districts of Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh, Rajsamand, Udaipur, Pirawa Tehsil of Jhalawar District of Rajasthan, Neemuch and Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Gujarat.#Mewar is derived from Medapata of the Meda tribe, which has been mentioned in Varāhamihira's Brihat-Samhita. The 1460 Kumbhalgarh inscription associates the Medas with Vardhana-giri (modern Badnor in Mewar region).Historian Sashi Bhusan Chaudhuri associates the ancient Medas with the modern Mer people.#Bappa Rawal is considered the founder of the Mewar state.While his predecessors had enjoyed control over limited areas in the hilly regions in the west and southwest of Mewar, Bappa was the first ruler to expand the state close to its later boundaries Mewar was founded around 530 AD; later it would be called Udaipur after the name of the capital. In 1568, Emperor Akbar conquered Chittorgarh, the capital of Mewar. In 1576, Maharana Pratap, the ruler of Mewar, was defeated at the Battle of Haldighati and Gogunda, Udaipur and Kumbalgarh were conquered. However through guerrilla warfare , Maharana Pratap recaptured western Mewar. In 1606, Amar Singh, his son defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Dewar. In 1615, after four decades of skirmishing, Mewar and the Mughals entered into a treaty under which Mewar territory under the Mughals' possession was restored to Amar Singh. Much later, East India Company extracted tribute from it.#Probably one of the prolific royal families in all of India, the Mewar Dynasty has seen great kings like Maharana Pratap.#Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar, father to Mahendra singh, Arvind Singh and Yogeshwari Kumari.Today, his descendants live in Udaipur. At the head of this family is Mahendra Singh Mewar,Arvind Singh Mewar and Yogeshwari Kumari (present gen). They are the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar. Besides being a nominal king, Mahendra Singh and Arvind Singh are very successful businessmen. They are the head of the HRH Group of Hotels, which have over 10 hotels under them.#Mahendra Singh Mewar#Arvind Singh Mewar and son Lakshyaveer Singh , present generation in the lineage of Maharana Pratap.#HRH Group of Hotels##The Rajput community at Garhshankar near Hoshiarpur recently celebrated the anniversary of Mewar's legendary warrior Maharana Pratap and a descendent from his 13th generation, Rawat Pradeep Singh came over to attend the event. In his speech Rawat Pradeep Singh shared, "Maharana Pratap had 25 brothers, five of whom died in wars in the eighteen century. We have a huge clan of our own that gets together at least once in a year. Most of us are now engaged in tourism and hospitality business." He blamed the successive governments for ignoring the plight of Chittorgarh Fort and the need to upkeep it.
