I think we're getting good results with our current setup:metric for science and engineering,ft-lb-gal-acre-Fahrenheit for household use.Indeed, I argue that it's intellectually stimulating to know how to convert between the systems casually. I hang with a lot of immigrants, including family members, so I routinely convert back & forth as needed.I find that when the metric mavens criticize the English units, they unnecessarily complicate things, seemingly deliberately:They include obsolete measures, like drams and hundredweights, just for the sake of drama;They obscure the sensible foundations of the commonly-used English units, so as to.make them seem absurd.As examples of sensible foundations:A mile is forty-eleven-dozen feet, [math]5280= 2^5\cdot 3\cdot 5\cdot 11[/math], a highly-divisible number, & that's why a mile is a useful measure.A fluid ounce was originally defined as exactly the volume of one weight-ounce of water, so that a pint of water (16 oz) weighed exactly one pound (16 oz.), just as is done for grams and ml's of water. This “oz = oz / pt = lb" definition is still nearly exact, so it's still valid for household use.A gallon actually converts surprisingly sensibly to cubic inches, by definition.: In the 1700s, a gallon was legally defined to be the volume of a pot that's 7 inches across and 6 inches deep. The definition explicitly assumed that [math]\pi=\frac{22}{7}[/math], so that one gal [math]= 231=3\cdot 7\cdot 11[/math] in[math]^3[/math].An acre [math]=[/math] 43,560 sq.ft. [math]= 30\cdot 11^2\cdot[/math] dozen sq.ft. [math]= (208.7 ft)^2[/math] is every metric maven's bugaboo, but only because noone originally cared about a land-area so small as a single acre. The natural unit of area for agriculture was actually forty acres, which is barely enough farm-land to support a family. A square plot of forty acres is 1320 ft on a side, which is a quarter mile. Put another way, a square mile equals 640 acres, or 16 minimal farms.Yet another way: a square one-acre plot is 66[math]\sqrt{10}[/math] feet on a side. Note that 66 feet (20.1 m) is the standard width of a rural road, from the land owner's fence on one side, to the fence on the other side.
