Teachers have staff meetings either by district personnel or outside organizations, like United Way or educational unions. Some inside staff will facilitate professional development on school improvement goals. Some time is designated for teams to plan units on a particular topic, or learn a new technology program or app or device. At the end of the year, the days are used for a checklist you have to complete and get signed off on before you can leave for summer break. What teachers really want to do is work in their classroom- cleaning, decorating, organizing papers and files, rearranging desks, etc. Little time is set aside for that.

There’s a lot of housekeeping and bookkeeping to be done at the end of the year. You have to re-gather the textbooks, clean out your classroom, file the final report cards in the main office, figure out honor roll, move your classroom furniture into the hall for summer cleaning, etc…Of course, I’ve mostly worked at small, private schools. Larger, public schools may have secretaries and staff people who handle a lot of this stuff. In fact, I learned when I student taught at a Chicago public school that teachers are not allowed to take the desks out of their room and into the hallway so the room can be cleaned over the summer. That’s the maintenance workers’ job. A teacher risks their job if they help prep the classroom for summer cleaning.There’s also usually a retirement luncheon for all of the faculty who aren’t coming back the next year. They call it a retirement luncheon, but it’s really for everyone who isn’t coming back, not just those who are retiring.If you’re getting a new principal (this has happened to me twice now), they will try to introduce them to the returning faculty before the summer break.There’s usually a printed checklist of things for teachers to do before leaving for the summer. Everywhere I’ve worked, we haven’t had to turn in our keys. I’m free to use my classroom all summer except for the week that they wax the floor. Then, if I needed a classroom for some reason, I could just use someone else’s.I take my projector home over the summer and sometimes set it up in my yard, aimed at a sheet, to watch TV outside.Anyway, that all happens after the students are gone. Everywhere I’ve taught, the 8th graders, who are the oldest in the school, get out a week earlier than everyone else. And, everywhere I’ve taught, the final grades have to be in the weekend before the last day for the students, so the report cards can be printed and given to them on the last day.The result is that I have two days with students in the class, but nothing to teach them. So I bring in my Wii, hook it up to the projector, and we have a Just Dance competition. That’s my favorite end-of-the-year ritual.

Hence, students and visitors would be asked to refrain from using the lift. Nevertheless, toothpicks will be left inside lift cabins in a small cup, in case of emergency. At no point will there be more than two people inside a lift cabin.Wearing a mask will be compulsory in all public areas. UPES has issued a directive to prevent gathering in any common area, including the cafeteria. Classrooms, library seating, cafeterias, and food courts are being rearranged to reduced capacity to maximise spaces between students up to recommended levels for social distancing.There is provision for an ambulance and medical facilities with doctors on campus.
