Where the gifted child drifts in the school unrecognized, working chronically far below his capacity (even though young for his grade), he receives daily practice in habits of idleness and daydreaming. His abilities never receive the stimulus of genuine challenge, and the situation tends to form in him the expectation of an effortless existence. Children with IQ's up to 150 get along in the ordinary course of school life quite well, achieving excellent marks without serious effort. Some researchers have raised the possibility that, like the relationship between IQ and crime, “the relationship between IQ and adjustment is curvilinear, changing from positive to negative at some point within the gifted range” (Grossberg & Cornell, 1988, p. 267). IQ scores of 160+ are associated with reduced self-esteem and increased risk of isolation, loneliness, and unhappiness (Gross, 1993). Even Terman, the unhesitating champion of high IQ, acknowledged that individuals with 170+ IQ scores frequently suffer from adjustment problems and confront “one of the most difficult problems of social adjustment that any human being is ever called upon to meet” (Burks, Jensen, & Terman, 1930, p. 265). Reanalysing the Terman data, another study found that while only 13% of men with verbal intelligence scores below 98 were maladjusted, 25% of those with scores between 117 and 136 were, and 45% of men with scores greater than 175 were (Towers, 1990). “[Low intelligence does not lead a boy into crime, although high intelligence may prevent him from going to a penal institution” (McCord, McCord, & Zola, 1959, p. 66). The negative relationship between IQ and offending is stronger for officially recorded offenses than for self-reported offending (Hirschi & Hindelang, 1977). When Murray and Herrnstein (1994) examined National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) data, the mean IQ of individuals who were sentenced to a correctional facility was 93; of those convicted but not incarcerated, 100; of those booked but not convicted, 101; of those stopped by the police but not booked, 103, and of those with no police contact whatsoever, 106. In their reanalysis of NLSY data, Cullen, Gendreau, Jarjoura, and Wright (1997) found that IQ scores were not significantly related to self-reported offending but were significantly related to officially recorded offending. They concluded, “Independent of their actual levels of crime, ‘cognitively disadvantaged’ offenders are more likely to be jailed and processed in the system” (p. 396). Beaver and his colleagues (2013) reported a negative relationship between IQ and self-reported arrest and incarceration. Consistent with most IQ-crime research, they found an association between low IQ and offending; but after controlling for this, they also found that low IQ increased penetration into the criminal justice system, suggesting a differential detection effect. “[T]he fact that IQ has effects on criminal justice processing variables after the effects of self-reported delinquency are removed tends to suggest that IQ may have effects that are the result of differential detection” (p. 286).We find that the probability increases to about 133 and then begins to fall. By 140 it has fallen by about 1/3 and by 150 it has fallen by about 97%. In other words, for some reason, the 140s are really tough on one's prospects for joining an intellectually elite profession. It seems that people with IQs over 140 are being systematically, and likely inappropriately, excluded. While increasing IQ, especially over 140, is inversely correlated with elite membership, 140-150 IQ is also characteristic of eminence (Nobelists, Fields Medallists, etc.). While there are a number of anecdotal and inferential citations, the most definitive study was that of Dr. Anne Roe (1952) in which she gave 64 of America's (U.S. born) most eminent scientists an IQ test that ETS had created for that purpose. As best as can be determined (there were methodological problems) the test rendered a 15 point ratio IQ and the average IQ of the group was 152. These may translate to lower IQs on earlier scales such as the Stanford-Binet Fifth Edition. Multiple genes appear to be implicated in IQ and cognitive ability (Beaver, Vaughn, Wright, DeLisi, & Higgins, 2010; Beaver, Wright, DeLisi, & Vaughn, 2012; Plomin, 1999), but “the influence of genetic factors on the development of intelligence is indisputable” (Nedelec, Schwartz, & Connolly, 2015, p. 470). Hunt (2011) summarized the data, writing, “Additive genetic heritability accounts for 40–80% of the variance in virtually all cognitive traits” (p. 243). Wright and Boisvert (2012) suggest an even higher figure: “Estimates of the heritability of intelligence generally range between 60% and 80%, with some studies finding that intelligence is almost 100% heritable” (p. 94). Gottfredson (1997) and 51 other experts on intelligence conclude, “Genetics plays a bigger role than does environment in creating IQ differences among individuals” (p. 14). While the same can be said of many inherited human characteristics (e.g., height, weight, or eye colour), this finding is noteworthy because IQ is relatively stable from childhood into adulthood (Deary, Pattie, & Starr, 2013) and correlated positively with desirable social outcomes such as academic achievement and employment (Ferguson, Horwood, & Ridder, 2005) and socioeconomic success (Marioni et al., 2014; Strenze, 2007).
