How is Panjab University compared to the Central University of Punjab for MA economics?

Thanks for A2A.I have been there for Master of Technology. So, for obvious reasons I can not compare the MA course in detail but I will focus on discussing the opportunities that both universities can provide for shaping your future.I am considering Panjab University as Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh(a lot of similar names are there ). PU Chandigarh is very well known reputed university of India. PU has been there for decades while Central University of Punjab (CUP) was established in 2009. PU is established university, there will not be any problem in infrastructure and amenities while CUP is growing at its’ own pace. As PU is located in urbanized Chandigarh city while CUP belongs to somewhat backward area of Punjab, exposure in PU would be better definitely. CUP is located in Bathinda, which is not like urban teir-1 cities but you will be able to find everything you need to live comfortably. In PU, you will have an advantage of having large alumni base with some of glorious alumni.Since, everything I wrote about PU, was about my logical opinion and its’ popularity but for CUP, it is my experience. The ambience is very good and inspiring. Crowd is less compared to PU as It is new and has only Masters and Research Programs. Since students get admitted via nationwide entrance test, there is some of brightest minds. Ample research opportunities are provided to even Masters students. Students are inspired and motivated to clear national level reputed competitions and scholarship exams. Significant number of students at CUP clear GATE, UGC NET, ICMR, CSIR JRF and MANF etc. A large number of Masters students get into Research and PhD programs of national repute institutes. The Profs are highly qualified and very supportive throughout the academic year. Department of Economics boasts of having very talented faculties. There is melange of cultures from all parts of our country. So, you will get know about culture of almost every part of India. There is harmony among the student fraternity(at least the time I was there) and everyone is helpful and friendly to each other.I think, now you are able to make a decision.Thank you.

Which is the best IIIT? Why?

Originally answered to “Which is the best IIT?Why?”(Abbreviations - B->Bombay, M->Madras, K->Kanpur, D->Delhi, Kgp->Kharagpur, R->Roorkee and G->Guwahati)I am a fourth-year undergraduate student from the Department of Economic Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. (Yep! IIT B/K/Kgp offer economics branch and the admission is solely through JEE Advanced). If you are a student (even if you aren’t, I hope this answer would enlighten you on how the old IITs fare in various aspects) who is done with JEE Advanced 2019, Congratulations on facing one of the toughest exams in the world. Give yourself a pat on the back and don’t worry if you didn’t do well, Nothing matters in the long run (but kindly forget this quote while reading further).Through this answer, I would address the factors to consider while choosing one’s branch and college and how to finally make a decision so that you don’t regret much during your college days and eventually you’ll get your answer for Which IIT is best? And this answer is quite long but it’s gonna be worth your time. The colleges I am gonna focus on would be mainly the old IITs especially IITK-my college, IITM-the college 15 km from my home, IITB-the best college right now; the way I compare these colleges would be useful to you to compare the colleges apart from these. What I am gonna pen down is from my experiences and from those whom I have talked to from different IITs. After reading my answer you must talk to as many seniors (should be at least 10 seniors who are in 3rd, 4th and 5th years only, from the department you wanna inquire about), professors from the respective departments and alumni - people graduated from a particular institute, as possible from different IITs (this is the whole point of my answer). But there is a catch here. There's a high probability that whomever you enquire about their college or branch, they are gonna either praise about their college/branch or tell the negative points in a very diplomatic way. So you need to ask the right questions. When you inquire I will also inform you in the later paragraphs, what questions to ask these seniors so that you make the right decision. Make an account on Facebook and Linkedin - a social networking platform for professionals, and get connected to current seniors and alumni of the institutes you wanna inquire about. I will also suggest you go consult a career counselor if you can afford them. So let’s get started. Oh, wait, a small caveat: This answer would contain some profanity; Hope you peeps don’t mind that.So my answer would be divided into 2 parts.Part-1: Factors to consider while choosing one’s branch and college.Part-2: Taking a decision. You would have heard (or about to hear) from many seniors from different IITs, alumni, and your coaching faculty that the oldest 7 IITs don’t differ much in placements, opportunities, infrastructure, facilities, etc..; But it isn’t so. Don’t give a shit about what they say. If they are all the same, why their ranks differ? If you say their ranks don’t differ so much, No it isn’t the case. According to 2019 QS rankings - one of the commendable resources on university rankings worldwide, IITB-162, IITD-172, IITM-264, IITK-283, IITKgp-295, IITR-381, and IITG-472. Now that’s a lot of difference. And if you only look into placements (which you shouldn’t and I’ll explain you later why) while entering any IIT, B tops the list and G comes at the bottom and among the top 5 K is at last (I got to know this while looking at the employer reputation factor given in the qs rankings after 3 years of my stay here. That low was my exposure. I hope students reading this answer would get clarity on how to weigh different factors while choosing the branch). So if at all there are no differences among the top IITs then these minute differences would play a major role in your decision. We will talk more about the different factors in the rankings later. You must through the websites of different IITs and explore what each IIT has got to offer; You would get a fair idea of what each institute is up to and only through these websites you would get to know the level of activities going on in each institute. Without any further ado, let's delve into the main part.Part-1: Factors to consider while choosing one’s branch and college:- The following are in my order of preferences (highest to lowest) the factors one should consider while choosing a college and I hope many seniors and alumni would also agree to this.1)Opportunities/Exposure: IITB easily wins the race here. Coming to placements (overall it’s the best, will discuss branch wise in the coming paragraphs) it has got the best record as according to QS employer reputation IITB>>IITM>>IITK. Apart from placements the opportunities one should consider are a)Internships(Industrial and Research), b)exchange programs and c)Extra-curricular activities that an institute has to offer. a) We IITians have 4 months of holidays in a year; one month in winter i.e whole of December and 3 months in summer i.e whole of May, June, and July. These are the times we go for internships - a job/research en-devour for 1/3 month(s) to explore a field and deciding whether to pursue further or not; internships are one of the important aspects of one’s college life. It’s through internships that students discover their field of interest. Many reputed companies come to various IITs from the start of 5th semester to recruit interns for the summers after their 3rd year (So a portal would be opened to register ourselves in the internship drive and we need to apply to the companies of our interest by sending our resume to that company through the portal). Students willing to pursue research internships in universities abroad/India apply through various programs available - forex: MITACS, DAAD, PURE, SURF, SURGE, SPARK, SRIP, etc. In our internship portal, only companies get registered but I heard recently even foreign universities register with the internship portal in IITB and conduct one-on-one interviews with the students and offer internship opportunities. This process saves a lot of effort from the student’s side and it helps one to apply for several opportunities simultaneously. This is not with both IITM and IITK. But still from what I have heard from my friends in IITM, what I concluded is the level of exposure in IITM is far better than in IITK. We need to apply to the programs on our own and the level of international exposure we get in IITK is abysmally low compared to even newer IITs. Just check out the IITB, IITM and IITK Office of international relations pages and you would get to know about their differences by yourselves. So w.r.t internship opportunities IITB>>IITM>>IITK. b) Again coming to exchange programs - opportunities through which students get a chance to spend 1 or 2 semesters in a foreign university to get exposure to their culture, education system, etc., again IITB comes at the top. You can again verify this by looking into the Office of International Relations page of each IIT. So w.r.t exchange programs IITB>>IITM>>IITK. Just look at the stats of IITB; IITK doesn’t even publish it because there would be hardly 5 students going for exchange per semester whereas in IITB it's 50. c) Even w.r.t extracurricular activities IITB>>IITM>IITK from what I have heard from my friends and the Facebook pages I followed. Check out these links for IITB and IITK, you would get to know the difference. And also check various club pages on Facebook of these institutes and you would get to know the frequency of their activities. And hence For overall personality development, I would rate IITB>>IITM>>IITK. So I think now you get that placements aren’t the only criteria to choose a college, there are many other factors.2)Facilities, infrastructure, and the naturalness: I have gone to IITM quite frequently to visit my friends. And the naturalness of IITM is far better than in IITK. There are quite many videos in youtube that can vouch for this fact. IITM has got more, dense trees and it’s a natural beauty in itself. In IITK there are trees and stuff but it was all grown for the past 50 years and there’s no natural element to it. From other quora answers I got to know that in terms of natural beauty IITB (it has got a mountain and a lake) and IITM are almost the same . So For naturalness IITB=IITM>IITK. Coming to facilities it can be divided into sports and academics. Sports wise again IITB wins the race here. My friends who have gone to aavhan - annual sports festival of IITB, have praised a lot about their sports facilities; like they have an Air-conditioned sports complex, indoor hockey stadium, wooden basketball courts, etc. You can again verify all these by searching their websites. IITB also maintain a commendable sports website on their own. Between IITM and IITK, IITK beats IITM by a tiny margin from what I have observed. All three have got facilities for squash, badminton, volleyball, basketball, swimming pool, etc. So For Sports Facilities IITB>>>IITK>IITM. I am not sure about the academic facilities as such. But I believe that at least among the top 5 IITs, there isn’t much difference. Coming to infrastructure, hands down, IITB again wins the race here. You can just get the idea by looking at their classrooms. Their infrastructure is top-notch; No doubt about that. And with respect to internet facility and speed (an important aspect of a student’s life), all three IITs would rank the same. In Infrastructure, Between IITM and IITK, IITK is slightly better. So in Infrastructure IITB>>IITK>IITM.3)Location of the institute: Once again IITB is the clear winner here. As you would have read from other Quora answers and also heard(or about to hear from) many seniors, Social life is best in IITB given that the institute is situated in a posh area of Powai in Mumbai which is also a metropolitan city. You have got tons of places to visit and enjoy. The location makes it feasible for international and national stars to visit the campus easily and interact with students. The location makes it feasible for them to host the best cultural, technical, entrepreneurial festivals in Asia. Just check out their FB pages and you would get to know the level of their conduction. The location makes them receive sponsorship from various corporations which allows them to conduct various workshops in various fields quite often. There’s just something happening in IITB always. Now coming to IITM; Even it is situated in a metropolitan city of Chennai and has got ample places (like it has one of the largest malls in India-Phoneix Market City, just walking distance from the institute) to visit and have fun. But the location is definitely not as grand as Bombay. I don’t have much idea about their fests and corporate relations, but I assure you no IIT can match the level of IITB in this regard. It is definitely in the 1st position for a reason. And I believe that colleges situated near the metro would definitely benefit from various aspects owing to the location. IITK is around 11 km away from the Kanpur city which I would say is the filthiest and the polluted city I have ever visited. There’s just filth everywhere. Me, coming from a metro city(Chennai), was a complete disappointment. I chose it mainly because of the branch and if I had known about this factor I would have reconsidered my options (I’ll talk about this trade-off in the coming paragraphs). There’s a mediocre mall named Z-square in the city which is also surrounded by filth. There are no places worthy to visit near campus and thus you would have a no social life here. One should also look into the basic facilities near college while choosing one; for example, Hospitals. Since in Health Centers(HC) of IITs you can avail the basic facilities, for something serious HC would refer to nearby hospitals. And Man believes me!! The hospitals in Kanpur are another storage place for filth; The sanitation in these hospitals is the worst of the worst (These observations are completely from my point of view; if you are from a metro city like mine, you would hate this city like hell). One day for some emergency I went to a hospital in Kanpur, and I saw filthy pigs roaming around the hospital making the entrance dirty. Thank God!! I was brought up in Chennai and Kudos to Kanpuriyans for getting used to this environment. 90% of the time you would find 99% of the male population in Kanpur either Chewing or spitting pan. These are the main culprits who make IITK dirty (you would find stains of red color pan masala in roads, near trees, etc.). So in Location IITB>IITM>>IITK. Hey but believe me, IITK is clean (but dusty, again due to its location) but not as clean as IITM/IITB, mainly due to the workers who spit pan wherever they find a place to do so. And one more thing, IITK is situated in UP. Just check this out and you would get to know what I mean.4)Academic structure: With respect to academic flexibility I would say all three institutes are equally good, but IITK f**ks you hard in terms of CPI/CGPA (Cumulative Performance Index/Cumulative Grade Points Average) by having the grade point system as 10-A,8-B,6-C,4-D,2-E,0-F rather than 10-S,9-A,8-B,7-C,6-D..(this is in IITM). Let me explain to you clearly. In IITK, in a course, if you get A*/A you get 10 points in that course. If you get a grade down you get 8 points in that course, not 9 as in other institutes. So even if you are few marks less than the cutoff for A your grade point goes down by 2, this gets worse as you get C, D grades. This greatly messes up with one’s overall CPI which is really really important if one considers for higher studies abroad. If you ask about this grading factor to a senior of IITK and if s/he says Like in some courses you get a 9 in other institutes, you get an 8 or 10 in IITK, and hence it doesn’t matter much as it gets neutralized at the end of 4 years. No, it doesn’t. Kindly stay away from those seniors who try to mask some of the bitter truths of IITK owing to their bondage to the institute. For example, this was my grade card in my first semester.Let’s analyze what SPI (Semester Performance Index) I would have got if I would have in IITM or any other institute for that matter. For now just assume the no: of units to denote the heaviness of a course. PE101A is a pass/fail course i.e S/X. So the units aren’t counted in SPI/CPI calculation. So SPI in IITK = (sum of(units*grade points))/(total no of units) = (6*6+11*6+3*8+11*8+11*10+9*6)/51 = 7.4; in IITM = (6*7+11*7+3*8+11*8+11*9+9*7)/51 = 7.7; You would think Ahh!!It’s just 0.3 right, No my child!! The difference gets even worse when one gets lower grades in many courses(Fortunately in my first semester I managed to get an A and a B). Assume an average student gets C in all the courses. In IITK his SPI = 6 and in IITM SPI = 7. Now that’s a lot of difference. But still, there are quite a handful of people in IITK whose CPI is above 8.5, but I am damn sure the number is very less compared to other IITs. Many people here convert to dual degree programs mainly to increase their CPI. This f***ed up Grade system of IITK is enough for you to not join this college. And it’s a general saying that Academics at IITK is tough. Yep, it’s indeed true. For the academic structure of UG students check out these links for IITB and IITK5)Professors: I have given this last preference as from what I heard from my friends in other IITs and my experiences, the teaching is generally quite bad (Yeah!! this is true even in IITs). But if you look at the credentials of the professors from IITs, they are really good. Check out the links of Faculty in the MEMS department in IITB, CHE department in IITM, ECO department in IITK (listing out these specific departments as I got these and below departments from these IITs). If you seek out help from them personally, they can be one of the best mentors in your life. So I think this factor won’t matter much in choosing the college. How to choose one’s branch? If you plan to do higher studies like MS and Ph.D., all the branches out there have an immense scope. From the research point of view, the opportunities that all the branches offer are the same, be it Computer Science or Biotechnology. You must also look into the websites of various branches of various IITs and decide whether you are interested in a subject or not. From the placements and internships point of view (But remember this is not the only criteria you should look into) Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics and Computing (Scientific Computing in IITK) have the maximum no: of opportunities. And those opportunities are mainly related to the Computer Science field. So other branches left are Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace, Metallurgy, Biotech, etc. From what I have observed in IITK and my friends in other colleges, there’s a high chance (around 75% maybe) that if you choose any one of the above-mentioned engineering fields (except CS and MMC) you would most likely start to hate your branch (either because of it’s low prospects w.r.t placements and internships or it’s really uninteresting) and try for non-core jobs like Analytics (which is very hot in the market right now), Consulting, Finance, etc. Students allocate time separately to develop skills so that they can enter into the non-core sector. Whatever you see in the placement stats showing students from CHE/CE/MSE/Aerospace branches bagging 20–25 lakhs packages, 90% of those are from Non-core companies that are open to all branches. None of them are from Core branches. Yeah!! There’s really high probability that what you are gonna do after 4/5 years of college in a private-sector job would have next to zero relation of what you gonna study in the coming 4/5 years. But I heard from my engineering batch mates that the jobs in the government sector are really hot for core engineering fields. So there are many options for core engineering fields in the public sector.I’ll tell you how I decided on my branch. When I was looking through the rank lists of the previous years I observed a pattern, what students were chosen according to their ranks, from various IITs and listed down the order of the branches and the colleges. Suddenly one day my brother showed me many good reviews in quora about the Economics branch at IITK and it’s future prospects; I was really excited. I talked to around 5 seniors from IITK about the Economics branch and their reviews too were very good. When I asked my classmates, brothers/sisters, what jobs have they taken after their study in IITs, most of them were into non-core fields because that is where the money lies in. So I decided, if there’s a high probability that I would be choosing a non-core field, then why study engineering? (btw I loathed physics and chemistry during 11th and 12th) . And thus without much thought, I decided I would be studying Economics in IITK. But the biggest mistake I did was I didn’t look into other factors which I mentioned earlier (on how to choose a college). I just saw the branch and the college is IIT and hence chose it. I didn’t look much into other factors like location, facilities, etc.. I sincerely hope whoever reads this look into all these factors and makes the right trade-off. Still, many more to share in this section will do it depending upon the response I get.Part 2: Taking a decision.Ask the following questions to as many seniors as possible of the aforementioned years. And while answering these questions ask them to be frank. How is the college environment? Is the environment-friendly?How hard is the branch? Will I get time to pursue extra-curricular activities? What are the future prospects of the branch? How important you think is social life during one’s college days? And is there a social life in IITX?I am getting the XXX branch in IITX and YYY branch in IITY and if I don’t have any branch preference. Which IIT to choose? So after receiving as many answers as possible from seniors and verifying my anecdotes and going through various websites of various IITs then come to a conclusion after making appropriate trade-offs.So coming to your question which IIT is best? It's none other than IIT BOMBAY.Post your doubts in the comments section. Share this to as many people as possible, so that they know that not all IITs are the same. I hope this answer reaches as many students (especially JEE aspirants) as possible and thanks for reading till the end.EDIT-1: 21/06/19: It’s nice to see my answer is helping quite many JEE aspirants. I would like to add some more points though. To be honest, this answer wouldn’t have been possible if not for the depression I went through last semester. It wasn’t because of IITK, but mainly because of a personal problem that I had been suffering for several years and it reached a peak in a form of depression in my last semester, due to various factors at IITK. I would explain what my problem was in another answer. Due to this I started comparing IITK with other IITs and was looking for the factors onto which IITK is better than IITB/M/D and was dejected for the most part seeing the reality. I know this is quite childish and all, but you know, the thoughts of regret were uncontrollable for me. It got subsided only after I consulted my college psychologist and a psychiatrist. As they say, The grass is greener on the other side, maybe what I was thinking about other IITs was completely wrong or I committed sampling bias by talking only to my friends who happen to have a great time at their IIT. I suppose even if you talk to depressed people at IITB/D/M, they would say bad things about their college. Even I had a great time at IITK during my first 2.5 years of stay (the time during which I took medications for my problem, but as soon as I stopped taking those medications things went haywire for me). Even though I knew many positive things about other IITs during those 2.5 years, I didn’t mind much...But last semester - not taking medications, uninteresting engineering subjects, mean acquaintances, etc. culminated in my sufferings. Whatever analysis I presented above was the result of my last semester’s ordeal. It may seem to you that I am quite biased against IITK, but I believe I am not; you can check out yourself by visiting various college websites and comparing them. You would have heard people saying It doesn’t depend on which college you are in, it all depends on the individual effort you put in where ever you are, even though it’s a cliched answer I feel it has some truth in it. Like, even in IITK, I know people who are doing their summer internship in HARVARD, and many other established universities and companies around the world. You can find these examples in many Tier-2,3 colleges too. But still, I wanted to write this answer to help you out if you are so confused about which IIT to choose among the ones you have a chance of getting into.Given the research opportunities are equally good in all the branches, the industry opportunities follow almost the pattern of how previous year students choose their branch i.e CSE>EE=MnC>>>>ME=CHE>>CE=AE=Meta>>BioTech>Chemistry=Physics ordered from highest to lowest. The companies have some amount of bias towards the BS students; they tend to prefer BTech students more than BS students for internships and placements. I do not know about the industrial opportunities of other branches offer like agriculture in IITKgp, Applied mathematics in IITR; When you ask about the subject content also ask about the prospects like internships, placements et,c. like whether companies offer internship opportunities to those branches or not.And also ask the seniors the following additional questions: 1) Was there any time you thought that you chose the wrong branch or college? If so why? 2) Was there any time you thought you didn’t research properly before joining the college? If yes what factors you think I must look into? 3) Tell me some biggest weakness of your college and branch. Also mention the strengths. But remember one thing WHATEVER DECISION YOU TAKE, THE OUTCOME OF IT MOSTLY DEPENDS ON THE ACTION YOU TAKE TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL FOR WHICH YOU TOOK THAT PARTICULAR DECISION IN THE FIRST PLACE.Thanks for reading.

Is Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College good?

On the occasion of their 97th foundation day on May 2, 2019, ARSD college won the award for the best website in the college category from Delhi University. A seemingly trivial thing right? Well, how about this? In the year 2017, the year of the launch of NIRF, the college bypassed more famous DU colleges to secure the 5th spot in the top 10 colleges in the country. Well, you might say that many other colleges failed to fill the form for NIRF. Well, how about the year 2019 when ARSD surpassed colleges like Kirori Mal and Venky by getting the 14th rank overall? All the DU colleges had participated this time. Flash in the pan? Maybe. Well, how about this then,ARSD college Department of Biotechnology is a recipient of the Star Innovation Project scheme of the Government of India for which they have received about 1.95 crores.2. The College was awarded the Girl Child Education and Empowerment Award 2017 and the Green Campus Award by Women Agency for Generating Employment (WAGE) on International Women’ day.3. As per the recent India Today ranking(2018) of Arts , Science and Commerce colleges in India, the college was ranked 12th among 100 Science colleges of the country and 11th among Commerce colleges in India, while 6th best college for Commerce among University of Delhi and 15th for Arts courses in India and bagged 8th position among University of Delhi. You do not have to be a genius to look at the trends. This college is on the resurgence. The power of word of mouth is powerful and so people will give tell you what others have told them. They will tell you that these colleges are better than those colleges. It is set in stone and these evaluations were the same when we were students and will be the same when your juniors will come and not much can be done about it. What you can do however is consider objective information like that I presented you. I can tell you from my personal experience the following:The infrastructure is one of the best when it comes to facilities. The facilities are comparable to the best in DU.Professors are one of the most knowledgeable men and women that I know. I have to also thank them for building my interest in subjects like behavioral economics which was frankly reduced to a footnote in DU’s economic curricula during my time. The alumni obviously include some big names like Rajkumar Rao but I am not swayed by these big names as the average student is not a Rajkumar Rao. Look at the people who are successful academicians, businessmen, and sportsmen. I know for a fact that several of my seniors have gone on to study at Delhi School of Economics, JNU, ISI, IGIDR not to mention several of the IITs. These people are role models for students like us who are not impressed by showbiz and flashy names. The extra-curricular environment is one of the finest in DU colleges, I was a part of SARANG the music society and have even won inter-college competitions. All that I know about music has its roots in the practice sessions in the music room. My seniors and batchmates were one of the most passionate students of Music( and good students too). The Dramatics society Rangayan routinely wins in inter-college competitions and is considered pretty formidable and is unique in conducting the four-day drama festival Rangsheersh Jaidev Natya Utsav. The sports facilities have recently been upgraded and now rank as one of the best amongst DU colleges.I have written this answer as a blend of objective facts and personal experiences. I have spent the formative years of my life and have created memorable experiences and made lifelong friends. I am biased as an alumnus of this college so I will urge you to take an informed decision but I would also urge you to not get swayed by common hearsay. Do your evaluation as you see fit and take a decision according to that. My best wishes regardless.
