PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the difference between “almuerzo” and “comida”, in the Spanish language? Both mean lunch, but when would you use one over the other?

Ok, ok. I will speak about Spanish from Spain. Let’s talk about the context first:Here in Spain, people wake up around 7 am in the morning and go to sleep around 11/12 pm. There are a lot of meals that take place at different times of the day, each one having their own name, and there is also a verb for each of them. Most of the people don’t get all of them, and maybe they have just 3 or 4, depending on their schedule.-The first meal when you wake up is called “desayuno” (literally “dis-fast”). Usually people just drink a cup of coffee, a glass of milk or a juice. Even when doctors usually say it should be the most important meal of the day, a lot of people skip this one. “Yo desayuno solo un café”. “Voy a desayunar y me voy al trabajo”.-Then students and workers have a mid-morning break for 20 or 30 minutes around 11 or 12 am. People usually eat a sandwich, a toast or a fruit. This is called “almuerzo”. People usually do it with co-workers or classmates. Example: “Es mi hora del almuerzo”. “Hoy no tengo tiempo para almorzar porque tengo mucho trabajo”.Note: “Lunch” is usually translated as “almuerzo” just because it takes place around the same time of the day, but I think that the social context and importance of the meal in the day are quite different.-Around 2 or 3 pm people have the main meal of the day, usually consisting in two dishes and a desert. We call this “comida”. Everybody has this one, and it’s very rarely skipped. Traditionally it’s a family meal, but nowadays’ schedules make it harder to combine studies or work with a family meal. “No sé qué cocinar para la comida”. “¿Que tenemos para comer hoy?”.Note: It’s quite confusing for a lot of non-Spanish speakers because “comida” is an homonymous word with the word “comida” meaning just “food”, the same for the verb “comer” that means “to eat”.-Around 6 pm people have the “merienda”. It’s like a mid-evening snack. People usually drink tea or coffee, eat a snack or whatever. It’s more common with children and it’s very often skipped by adults. “¿Qué quieres tomar para la merienda?”. “Tengo hambre, creo que voy a merendar.”-Around 10pm people have the second most important meal of the day, which is called “cena”. It’s one single dish, not as heavy as the one from the “comida”. This is also a family meal. “La cena ya está preparada”. “Hoy no me apetece cenar”.Hope this helps!

How do Spanish speaking people translate future perfect continuous into Spanish? Next year, I will have been working for the company for 30 years.

"El año entrante, cumpliré 30 años trabajando en/con/para la empresa". Instead of "año entrante" you may use "año próximo". "Con la empresa" is "with the company or corporation". "Para la empresa" is "for the company or corporation".
