PDF Editor FAQ

My 15-year-old daughter is not allowed to go to friends’ houses and is complaining about it. What do I do?

What I'm hearing is, “I'm an overbearing control freak and my young adult teen is not allowed any freedoms. This upsets my young adult and I can't fathom why!?”Unless your daughter did something down right wrong or criminal and is being punished there is no reasonable point in not letting her spend time with friends. My youngest is now 13 and goes on overnights for anywhere between a night and five nights on a regular basis. She has been going to friends on her own since she was 7. She had a curfew and check in times to meet but she was allowed to spend time with friends in the neighborhood. If she wanted time with friends further away we drove her or her friend's parents picked her up. Now like I said she is 13 almost 14 and she still goes out and spends time with friends. She has a later curfew and still has a time that she needs to call and check in. I use location sharing on Google maps and we have an agreement to always have it on and keep her phone charged. Since she keeps good grades, doesn't miss school, goes where she is allowed, checks in, and always makes it home before her curfew this is never an issue. I'm raising a young adult. I'm teaching that young adult responsibility, trust, rules and healthy boundaries, etc. I'm teaching her how to survive in an adult world. By cutting your daughter off from all social contact you are mentally and emotionally crippling your daughter. She is not going to learn trust. She is not going to learn healthy boundaries. She is not going to learn human interaction skills that her life as an adult will require. Young adults NEED, as in scientifically and psychologically proven NEED, peer interaction and socialization to grow up healthy. Of course she is angry with you, hell I would be too. Unless there is some major logical and sound reason for her to be cut off from friends and a social life, cut the apron strings already and let her live and breathe a little.

My 18 year old son enlisted in the military without telling me or his mother. How can I talk him out of going to basic training?

My 18 year old son enlisted in the military without telling me or his mother. How can I talk him out of going to basic training? If this is something he wants, you should support him. I’m sure in many ways he may still be a child, but at 18 he is legally an adult. Talking him out of going to basic training isn’t really a viable option. You see, once he has signed an enlistment contract it isn’t something he can easily back out of or simply ignore. If your son truly has a change of heart, he needs to go to his recruiter as soon as possible to discuss his options. Just be aware, recruiters are skilled in dealing with cases of ‘cold feet’ among recruits and don’t lose very many. Unless he works with the recruiter and gets his contract voided officially, he must report to MEPS for in-processing when ordered. Failure to report could result in a warrant for arrest.I recommend finding a way to be supportive and be proud of him, even if you are not in agreement with his decision to serve. The military service can be a very positive experience for a young adult. Best wishes to you and your son.

What are the signs of psychopathy?

Looking through your profile, I wouldn’t worry about being a psychopath. In fact, I wouldn’t give yourself too hard a time. You appear to be a teenager, which means something crucial about your development is happening, and you likely are completely unaware of it. Due to this development, you can feel a whole plethora of things that don’t make any sense.Until you reach twenty-five, your brain is growing. The brain matures back to front, and the last sections to finish maturing and operating properly is the executive suite and emotional reasoning center. This means that until you are twenty-five, you can feel completely out of sorts and not understand why.A cooperative project at MIT is dedicated to examining the brains of young people and their development, the link can be found below. It is a project with over five hundred reference materials, and is being conducted by one of the most respected and advanced universities in the world. They state the following;“Responding to increasing awareness and concerns, the MIT Young Adult Development Project was created in 2005 to analyze, distill, and disseminate key findings about young adult development, findings that shed light on the unique strengths and dramatic challenges for this extraordinary period.Defining young adulthood as the years between 18 and 25, the project focused on identifying research conclusions about which there is widespread agreement across disciplines and researchers, as well as practical relevance for universities, employers, parents, human service practitioners, and young adults themselves.”Their determination thus far;Prefrontal cortex: The most widely studied changes in young adulthood are in the prefrontal cortex, the area behind the forehead associated with planning, problem-solving, and related tasks. At least two things affect the efficiency in its functioning:myelination: the nerve fibers are more extensively covered with myelin, a substance that insulates them so that signals can be transmitted more efficiently, and synaptic pruning: the "briar patch" of connections resulting from nerve growth are pruned back, allowing the remaining ones to transmit signals more efficiently.Connections among regions: At the same time, the prefrontal cortex communicates more fully and effectively with other parts of the brain, including those that are particularly associated with emotion and impulses, so that all areas of the brain can be better involved in planning and problem-solving."Executive suite": The cluster of functions that center in the prefrontal cortex is sometimes called the "executive suite," including calibration of risk and reward, problem-solving, prioritizing, thinking ahead, self-evaluation, long-term planning, and regulation of emotion. (See Merlin Donald, Daniel Keating, and others in References.) It is not that these tasks cannot be done before young adulthood, but rather that it takes less effort, and hence is more likely to happen.20s and beyondAccording to recent findings, the human brain does not reach full maturity until at least the mid-20s. (See J. Giedd in References.) The specific changes that follow young adulthood are not yet well studied, but it is known that they involve increased myelination and continued adding and pruning of neurons. As a number of researchers have put it, "the rental car companies have it right." The brain isn't fully mature at 16, when we are allowed to drive, or at 18, when we are allowed to vote, or at 21, when we are allowed to drink, but closer to 25, when we are allowed to rent a car. This is why psychopathy is never determined in children or teenagers, and why it also should not be determined until after that person’s brain is fully matureUntil your brain is done growing, psychopathy shouldn’t even be on your radar. Likely you are just along the same path of development that all humans take. Give it time, and things should even out and make sense.Athena Walker's answer to Why is autism diagnosed in children but not psychopathy when so many behaviours are similar/can be observed in childhood?Parenting Adolescents
