PDF Editor FAQ

As an American, would you be willing to pay more tax so that health care is free at point of use for everyone in the US?

When I was in the US Navy, we had CHAMPUS. Our healthcare was paid for with taxpayer dollars through what basically amounted to a single-payer system. The only time we paid for our own healthcare was if we were given a choice for optional care, as in, if we opted to get a potassium IV for $8 instead of opting to not get the IV and eat a banana instead.By the time I’d joined the US Army, we’d switched to Tricare, which was public-private partnership granting the private insurance company a full monopoly by region and funded by the military. The cost to the military quadrupled, even though care started to be a bit harder to get. In fact, chronic conditions that are permanent still had to be tested for annually to confirm that the permanent condition was still permanent, and there were even cases of men being given pregnancy tests. One of the men in my unit in Korea had a hairline fracture in his femur, and was still told to take Ibuprofen, drink more water, and keep running for months before being given an X-ray. It was ridiculous. Now I’m out and living the civilian life where the insurance offered by my current job only applies to full-time employees who opt-in and cost 3 times our income for the first year, has a high deductible, and only covers a few conditions. Cancer treatments, diabetic supplies, women’s care (aside from the most basic annual check-up) were not covered at all until the ACA kicked in.So would I mind paying an extra $10 or so per year so we could scrap private insurance and public-private partnership monopolies and just switch to a more CHAMPUS-like system, aka Medicare for all? Not at all. I would gladly pay a bit more in taxes in order to save the lives of others, save thousands per year in insurance costs and out-of-pocket costs, and allow for a form of collective bargaining to keep the wealthy from just simply marking up life-saving medications and treatments by 5,000% to boost their profit margin to ridiculous levels.

How much does it cost to stay in a psychiatric hospital?

I do not know. I am an US Army Veteran and my husband is a retired US Army. Becuase I am a Veteran I recieve free health care including Psychiatric Hospital stays. In addition I am on my Husband's Tricare insurance. However, I suppose it would all depend on whether the person had health insurance that covers Psychiatric Hosital Stays. Most counties, cities and States over free hospital stays through the MHMR programs

Is it worth staying in a US Army 30-year career?

I agree with the other answers, and would reiterate that it’s better in a lot of cases to retire after 20 years instead of 30 years. Let me use my career as an example.I retired after 20 years (10 USN and 10 USCG). The two years before I retired, I completed a master’s in information systems, and went to work as an IT contractor. I was young enough to start a second career. After a few years as a contractor, I decided that I wanted to work as an independent consultant. I had Tricare health insurance, Delta dental insurance, and commissary and exchange privileges from my military service, without which I couldn’t have made ends meet as a consultant.I also had my military pension, which, while not great after only 20 years, was a good fallback for those times when consulting was slow. If you have worked as a consultant, you’ll know that consulting is a feast or famine proposition.Consulting also let me set my own hours, so I was able to stay in school and finish my PhD using the GI Bill. I got tired of consulting, and between my industry experience, the military experience and academic qualifications, I was able to land my current position as a professor and program chair in academia. It has been a good ride, and it’s not over. I’m starting a master’s in data analytics, and plan to start an analytics program at my school. In summary, it is easy to stay for 30 years in the military, because after 20, you’re probably pretty comfortable. In fact, I was thinking about sticking around, but an old Warrant took me aside and said, “Sir, with your retirement, you could work at Macdonalds and make what you’re making now.”But if you want to do something new and interesting, retiring at 20 gives you a lot of time to do something else. My first job after retirement paid twice my military salary, and I didn’t have to wear a hat!
