Update as of 10.12.18The Warriors have one roster spot remaining (really 2 spots but GM Bob Myers has said they will not carry 15 players) and it is increasingly likely that it will not go to Patrick McCaw.Guaranteed 13 - Curry, Thompson, Durant, Green, Iguodala, Livingston, Cook, Jones, Bell, Cousins, Looney, Evans, JerebkoNext Spot - The Warriors still need a wing especially with Jacob Evans not looking like a plug and play 1st rounder. But now with Draymond Green’s knee acting up, suddenly they are weak at the PF position as well.McCaw - There still is time for a reconciliation but it appears McCaw is not listening to his agent or the Warriors. Both of those parties are telling him to sign and become a free agent next year. But McCaw’s father is telling him to hold out and get a bigger role on another team.Currently on the roster - Marcus Derrickson, Danuel House, Alfonso McKinnie. Of that group, it looks like McKinnie would be the guy. He is athletic with a developing jumper and has the skills to be a good defender.[1] When he has received playing time he has performed the best in the preseason as well.Not on the roster - This is a large group and very difficult to predict. But this is how Quinn Cook got his two-way contract last year so it should not be discounted.My best guess is that the Warriors give McKinnie a two-way contract but he starts with the big club. But after his finals performance (13-15 from the field) he guaranteed a spot on this roster. So that is 8 players for $102.2M and Jason Thompson had his contract stretched out and still costs $1M against this year’s cap so $103M.Kevin DurantHe deserves his own section and whatever contract he wants. [4][4][4][4]2-year deal would pay him $30M next year. [5][5][5][5]3-year deal would pay him $35M next year.4-year deal would pay him $35M next year.I just get this feeling KD wants the combo of security and flexibility which leads me to the 3 year deal. Really it would be 2 year with a player option for the 3rd year. He plays for $35M next year. So now the Warriors are at 9 players and $138M.David West – Will retireNick Young – Swaggy P was fun and he got his ring . Now see ya later.Zaza Pachulia – Retire or different teamKevon Looney – The Warriors declined his 4th year option and are limited to offering him a maximum $2.2M contract. Even with that restriction I am going to go out on a limb and say he is on the team next year. He is a very valuable player because of his ability to switch on smalls during the pick and roll but he is extremely limited offensively. His offensive limitations will severely depress his market and facilitate a return to the warriors. He will sign a 1 year $2.2M contract. So now the Warriors are at 10 players and $140M.Patrick McCaw – McCaw regressed after a very promising rookie year but I believe he showed enough last year somebody will offer a contract the Warriors just can’t match.Javale McGee – It was certain during the playoffs that he was gone but then the finals happened and he actually guarded LeBron James well. I was shocked. LeBron actually stopped attacking McGee a few times which is just unthinkable. The Warriors only can offer the veterans minimum $2.3M. I am going to say no he is not on the team but it is really close.Chris Boucher – Who? He was an undrafted free agent on the Oregon Ducks team. He was actually the star, not Jordan Bell but Boucher tore his ACL late in the season. He has rebounded on the Warriors G league to have a decent season. [6][6][6][6] Next year after another 6 months of recovery from his ACL he will make the Warriors team. He is a 6’11” big man who can blocks shots, hit 3s, and rebound. Exactly what the Ws are looking for. He will sign the minimum at $1.4M. Now 11 players at $142M. Update: Boucher was cut by the Ws. He will not be on the team.1st round pick – The Warriors have the 28th pick in the draft and will likely draft a wing player. I won’t get into who the Warriors should target (I’ll save that for another answer). But the 1st rounder will cost $1.2M.[7][7][7][7] That puts the roster at 12 players and $142M. Update: Jacob Evans2nd round pick – The Warriors don’t have a second round pick but will try to buy one like last year with Jordan Bell. This is just a guess but I don’t think any NBA teams will sell the Warriors a pick this year. The teams saw how much heat the Bulls got for selling that pick and it just isn’t worth it for $3M. Update: They did not make a 2nd round pick.Tax payer MLE – The last spot on the roster goes to the tax player MLE for $5.5m. This will be a veteran who signs with the Warriors for lesser money to try and get a ring. Last year it was Swaggy P, not great. For this spot you have to look at the roster construction.PG – Curry, Livingston, CookSG – ThompsonSF – Durant, IguodalaPF – Green, Bell,C – Jones, Boucher, LooneyThey could use a veteran center and more shooting at the wing position. Relying on Boucher right now would be foolish so I am going to out on a limb and bring back Anthony Tolliver. He goes ring chasing with a 1 year $5.5M contract. That puts the roster at 13 players and $148M.Veteran Minimum – I don’t have any sense of who this could be but it will be a SG or SF who can shoot and hopefully play a little defense. That puts the roster at 14 players and $150M.I believe they will leave the 15th roster spot open for a possible mid-season addition and help with their luxury tax bill. Chip Kelly is a casualty of Trent Baalke’s tenure as General Manager. And when Baalke was shown the door, Chip had to be, too: it’s a lot harder to hire a GM if you already have a head coach in place.The past few seasons for the 49ers have been absolutely painful, and they cost Baalke his job. After 3 straight trips to the NFC Championship Game, including one of those leading on to the Super Bowl, the team went 8–8 in 2014 and dismissed Jim Harbaugh as Head Coach. Boneheaded move #1! Stories vary about exactly what lead to Harbaugh’s departure, from personal friction with 49ers CEO Jed York to conflicts with the front office about additional roster control. But in any case, the team tossed the most successful 49ers coach in quite a few years for no good reason, then hired a team loyalist in Jim Tomsula who simply wasn’t ready for the job.Moreover, Baalke’s work as GM - principally including building the roster - has sucked. Okay, sure, he got hit with a couple of curve balls - Chris Borland retired unexpectedly after a fantastic rookie season, and Aldon Smith couldn’t drink without driving. But quite a few other retirements were expected, and the team hasn’t done much of anything in the draft or free agency in several years. They’re rolling over $40 million in salary cap space! Boneheaded move #2! The owners aren’t hurting for money, and the team’s sitting on that much cash, coupled with bad drafting (including Baalke’s famous “all-ACL” team strategy) has given the 49ers about the weakest roster in the NFL.(I hear you wondering: what does all that have to do with Chip Kelly?)Finally, the team’s record this season was horrible. That’s not all Chip’s fault - see the aforementioned weak roster - but Chip’s coaching didn’t do much to change it, and being the Head Coach means the buck stops with him. He was brought in when the GM was on the hot seat, and wasn’t able to improve on the team’s 5–11 record under Jim Tomsula, sliding to a 2–14 record in 2016. Again, given the dearth of talent on the roster, that’s not all his fault, but he’s also had some coaching challenges. Principally, in just about every third quarter, the offense collapsed.And this isn’t to say that I think he should’ve been shown the door - I liked what he did with a weak team this year - but the reality of NFL team management is that the GM and the coach have to operate as a unit, and that generally means that the GM has to hire the coach. If Jed York really is interested in rebuilding the team, he needed to clean house.But he really shouldn’t have leaked that Kelly was going to be fired the night before the game. That was unprofessional.

Believe it or not, the Warriors would be in a worse state than they currently are if they resigned Kevin Durant. Let’s think about how this would realistically play out…KD resigns with the WarriorsThe D’Angelo Russell trade doesn’t happen because KD stays with the Warriors.Demarcus Cousins resigns for another small, possibly even minimum 2-year contract and attempts to run back his title hopes with the Warriors when KD comes back. Cousins for at low contract even with his injury history would be too good of an offer to pass up. The gang’s back together, and everything’s all good with the world, right?WRONG!Here’s the position the Warriors would be in if this all happened:• The team would have likely still traded Andre Igoudala to clear cap space.• The team doesn’t resign Shaun Livingston because he retires• The doesn’t sign Willie Cauley-Stein because they had Demarcus Cousins• Kevin Durant would still be out for the season• Klay Thompson would also be our for the season• Demarcus Cousins would be out for the season after tearing his ACL practicing in the summer• Steph Curry would still miss the majority of the season after breaking his hand.• Kevon Looney still misses a good first portion of the regular season due to injury.Aside from Draymond Green, this team’s starting lineup is completely different, and as good as Draymond Green is as a player, he’s not a scorer and can’t carry team in a loaded Western conference by himself to the playoffs… The Warriors predicament is arguably even worse because they’ve lost D’Angelo Russell the only player who would’ve been a consistent, reliable scorer on this roster. Either way, with or without Durant, the Dynasty would still be over…
