PDF Editor FAQ

Where did members of the Knights Templar get their food? Did any members hold other actual jobs within or aside from the Order?

Knights Templar UK"Helping to reclaim our once great nation and to help our most vulnerable"Mysteries, legends, adventure and myths, the history of the Knights Templar has it all. It has one of the most recognisable symbols in the world today, the red cross. In 1128 Pope Honorius II assigned the templar Knights the white mantle of the Cistercians, on which they wore the red cross with square ends. However in 1147, Pope Eugenius III ordained the use of the 'Eight Pointed Cross', which has been used by the Knights Templar ever since. But, who are the Knights Templar ?Few people really know, and on this site we give a brief history of the order, the power they held, what they have become now, and details of how you, as a citizen , can, by becoming a member, help the United Kingdom, be more the place you want it to be. Compared to other Knights Templar organisations, it's likely you'll find our organisation is more "forward thinking" to achieve our aims, with a few modern adaptations, are attempting to fight for what the original Knights Templar, were actually formed for.Think about this : The original Knights Templar were formed as a Christian Military Order to protect pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. Because of little or no armies and lack of defence, many European countries then hired the Knights Templar to fight against the march of Islamic migrants becoming dominant in those countries. All this was happening in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries.Protecting ones faith ? Not wanting to be governed by others ? Lack of proper defence ? Ever growing march of immigrants ? Ring any bells ?If you genuinely care about preserving the British way of life, don't just moan about the injustices being done and then do nothing, because doing nothing, allows them to happen ! At least try to do something about it and maybe join our ever growing membership. Our increasing family of sisters and brothers who fiercely care about one another and our Nation. With Area Commanderies throughout the UK. We regularly meet up to help recruit, share petitions, socialise and visit historical places of interest. We like to help out in our communities and help as many people as possible. Whether it is giving our time, any act of kindness, no matter how big or small, touches someone. On a regular basis, we give money for good causes and various charities. We find it incredibly sad that people confuse patriotism with racism and we definitely want to clarify the difference. We are NOT right wing and hate speech is not tolerated in any shape or form within our organisation.Join us and help make a difference and a positive impact in making our Nation great once more. In addition forming lasting friendships and support along the way. http://NB.To avoid confusion, we are Welcome to Knights Templar-UK, a well established, respected organisation & have no connection whatsoever to any political party ( as some so called Templar groups are) or to any other templar groups/sites/organisations,The KTUK Anthem. Click here to download. Please don't forget to bookmark us and put us in your 'Favourites' (CTRL+D)The Knights Templar were a French religious military order founded in Jerusalem in AD1119 by Hugues de Payens, to protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. During the 12th and 13th centuries the Templars played an important role in the crusades sanctioned by Pope Innocent II who in AD1139 placed the Templars under direct papal authority. This holy brotherhood, or to give them their full designation, 'The Order of Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon' (Pauperes commilitones Christi templique Salomonis) referring to their original headquarters on the site of the Temple of Solomon which was given to them by King Baldwin II of Jerusalem, lived under austere vows of poverty and chastity according to the rule of St Bernard of Clairvaux. They can be well described, as a band of fighting monks. The order comprised four ranks: servants, chaplains, sergeants, and knights, the latter wearing white surcoats with the red cross of St. George. It was in 1147 though, that Pope Eugenius III ordained them to bear the familiar eight pointed cross, which is said to be older in history, than the St George's cross. By the 13th century there were as many as 20,000 knights. As mentioned, originally these 'fighting monks' protected those Christian pilgrims wishing to travel to the holy city of Jerusalem. Their success at this task, and further success in the Holy Crusades, gave rise to their reputation as a formidable fighting force, one that was not to be toyed with ! It's this reputation that led many Kings and countries of Europe to enlist their help, in times of trouble.........and, in the following century or so, trouble was certainly 'a brewing'. Most of the countries of Europe were Christian in their beliefs, however the march of the Islamic faith began to infiltrate into the heart of most Christian lands (ring any bells ?). The Kings and landowners were happy in their belief in Christianity and didn't want to be taken over over by Islam or to have Islam have any say in the running of their countries affairs. The main problem was though, that most of these countries and lands, didn't have an army large enough or well equipped enough, to repel such foreign notions. Who better to help them out then, than the good old Knights Templars ? After all, they were the fighters for Christianity, that being the very task they were formed for; to protect against invasion of Christian beliefs. And, so it came to pass, that over the next century or so, the troubled Kings and landowners, hired the services of these formidable Knights to do that very thing, to protect the Christian way of life. In many ways, you can say the Knights Templar, were the first organised mercenaries ! And, it must be said, a task they were singularly successful at.Going into the 13th and 14th centuries, most of the wars had been won, Europe was virtually at peace and the once vast Knights Templar army, a mere fraction of it's former size. However, the Knights Templar were still very powerful, for they had become very ricKnights Templar UK | Modern HistoryAn original Templar Sealdepicting two knights on onehorse, which reflects theiraustere religious vowsof poverty and chastity.Hence they could only afford twoknights to one horse. After good old King Philip IV of France, did his dirty deeds in 1307, the Knights Templar were all but finished. After seeing many of their brothers burned alive, tortured and generally put to death, the few Knights remaining, simply fled, and who can blame them ! From then on in, what was left of the original Knights Templar, disappeared into the eons of time, with no definitive history recorded about them, only legend. It is said that a few of the remaining Knights joined the Freemasons, although again, there is no definitive proof of this but the Freemasons do have a Knights Templar sectionIt is well worth pointing out here; it is only the Pope who can ordain a holy order (as he did with the Knights Templar) and it is only the Pope who can disband a holy order (as he did with the Knights Templar). All this means, that any organisation (including ours) who call themselves Knights Templar today, whatever there website tries to imply or state, is not a holy order, has no descendancy from the original Knights and is not sanctioned by the Pope. We ourselves, have no connection to any other Knights Templar group, organisation or political party and have no connection with Freemasonry. In many ways, we are the modern face of the Knights Templar, because the original Knights Templar ideals, seem to mirror very similar ideals to ours and what's going on in the world today.I have looked at many of the so called Templar groups in the UK and around this world, and there are quite a few. Looking especially at their web sites and their ideals, to me, it seems that most of these organisations, whilst having maybe spiritual empathy with the original Knights, are more concerned with the pomp, ceremony and regalia of those bygone years. I must say though, that many have took up charitable works and give help to those in need, which is highly commendable. In addition however, I know from a couple of sites I've visited, that their main purpose is to sell you copies and modern interpretations of Templar paraphernalia, at greatly inflated prices. One of these sites, having only come in to being in 2015, boasts an 'international' status, but it seems, is actually linked to a British far right political party and from what I've assertained can be somewhat unreliable in taking your money and not delivering the goods. Be very careful who you join, or order Templar paraphernalia from. However, If you want a new social life in a brotherhood of peace and harmony, wish to help your fellow man out with charitable causes and and having a 'get together' every few weeks. Then we are the group for you. We are hands on by finding, sharing or starting petitions, recruiting and building our order. Thus our 5th column agenda will eventually take hold.Knights Templar UK | A Good MoanI believe in Freedom of the individual and justice. Freedom to think what you want think, freedom to protect your way of life, and freedom to carry out your ideals, if you can legally do so. However many of these freedoms are under threat in the UK, and many other countries too.Knights Templar UK | A Good Moan 1What do you moan about ? I'll tell you the things I moan about, the main one being immigration and especially illegal immigration. To some degree, immigration is needed in most countries, to fill parts of the economy and the work force. There are at times, as happened with the UK, moments in history when a country needs a little help, and immigrants are actually invited to come and help out, with the promise of being a British Citizen. In the past, this has proved worthwhile for us, and we have many immigrants and generations of those immigrants, who have proved to be solid, loyal citizens of the UK.Not so these days though ! Just about anybody it seems and especially after we joined the EU and implemented Tony Blair's infamous Human Rights Act, can now come to the UK, take our jobs, take our money and take our housing ! This seems to be the case for both legal immigrants and illegal immigrants. There are many countries in this world who, on finding an illegal immigrant or bogus immigrant, immediately deport them, back to from whence they came.Something we ought to do, rather than go through the 'procedures', which very often allow said 'immigrant' never to be seen again ! Somehow in the UK, we seem hog tied, to even get rid of those who have entered illegally. "Report to the local police station every week, so we can look at your case over the next year", is the mantra our politicians seem to tell these illegal immigrants. In most cases they don't do so, and disappear into the 'black economy'. Oh dear !Knights Templar UK | A Good Moan 2Mind, when you do actually hold someone, we find it difficult to dispose of them. How many times have you read in the press about someone we can't deport, even though the person in question may hate the very existence of the UK ? And, to add insult to injury, use the freedom which our country affords them, to protest and plot against us. Something, incidentally, they probably wouldn't be allowed to do in their own country. It beggars belief.Until recently one of the biggest moans I had, was being a member of the European Union. However, our Knights and Dames helped the campaign to leave the EU and victory became ours, we've set about freeing ourselves from the constraints of the EU and regaining our sovereignty. Now, I'm a firm believer in letting bygones be bygones and in us all getting on with each other and being friends and trading partners. However, I believe in the sovereignty of each country to rule themselves the way they want it to be run and not have some bureaucrat in some other country, tell me what to do. We had been trading successfully for centuries with our Commonwealth friends and the rest of the world and we shall continue to do so. Even though we're leaving the EU, Europe will still trade with us and we with them. There may be a little turbulence over the next couple of years, while we extricate ourselves, but everything will turn out okay. Britain is great and will continue to be so outside of the EU.My final big moan ? Get our troops out of the countries where we don't belong, mainly the Middle East. Let them govern their own destiny, we're losing too many soldiers and really what for ? Most of these countries are tribal, always have been and always will be. They've never been able to agree with each other, let alone a western country. Recent history proves it. Have you noticed how you don't hear much about Libya, since the fall of Gadaffi. Why ? It's because all the various tribes are falling out with each other, on who should run the bloody country! A similar situation is simmering in Egypt and look at Iraq ! It's still a dangerous place to be with the Sunni and Shiite factions, still feuding with each other, 1400 years from when they first started. And that's let alone feuding with the Western world. The same can be said for many of the Middle Eastern countries. Throughout history, they've been tribal, they're tribal now and will be tribal in the future. We're fighting a losing battle trying to force western values, ideals and democracy on them.Knights Templar UK | A Good Moan Final PartOur defence is at an all time low, because the government say any threat to us is very low, and it's very unlikely we'll get attacked. Very low eh ? Look at ISIS trying to swarm over Iraq and Syria, we didn't see that one coming, did we ? Whose not to say, that organisations like that, if they go unchecked, are not going to have such idea's about Europe and the UK ?I don't feel it's a good idea to think that our western ideals and values should be imposed on countries who throughout time, have been happy to exist the way they have done. It maybe, that a strong dictator is the only way to keep such tribal countries, in what we consider, some kind of order. After all, up until recent times and certainly for the past few decades, there has been relative stability in these lands. If the population wants to overthrow such people, they should be ones to do it, without help from the western world. Each unto his own, I say.During these few pages, I have attempted to give you a brief resume of my moans. Obviously there can be much discussion and argument, as to whether I am right in my beliefs. Right or wrong though, they are what I believe, and I am entitled to those beliefs under the free and democratic society, in which I and you, for the moment at least, live and enjoy. In conclusion, do you agree with, or broadly with what I've said ? If so, I'll ask you another question i.e.. What are you doing about it ? My guess is, most of you will reply 'nothing really'. It's amazing, that most of us have a good moan at whatever we like to moan about, but actually do very little to change them. I used to be like that, but as I've got older I've realised that I want my descendants to enjoy the privileges and freedom that I have enjoyed. Privileges and freedoms that are becoming quickly eroded, and may not be there in the ages to come. And that, my dear reader, is important. And, it is something, you can do something about. If you think it's time that you ought to put your money (not much of it) and a little effort, where your mouth is, then read our Aims and Membership sections and join us.It may turn out to be, that this order of The Knights Templar, is for you. If it is, we'd be only too pleased to welcome you.Knights Templar UK | Our AimsMost other Templar organisations follow the pomp and ceremony of what they think the original Knights Templar portrayed and enjoy the regalia to go with it. Apart from charitable works though, I haven't seen any of them actually follow what the original Knights Templar were formed for ! i.e. to protect the rights of Christians and their way of life. The aim of this organisation though, is to broadly follow their original ideals, but broadening it out, to not only Christianity in the UK, but to all other lawful faiths and non faiths, such as Agnostic, and Atheists. At the moment in the UK, we enjoy a balanced environment, where people can follow their own faith or non faith without hindrance. However, with the advent of mass immigration, this balance can be swung in many directions, including ones where extremists of particular faiths, may wish to dominate and control other's beliefs.Aim One.... Immigration. We seek to persuade our government to amend our immigration laws, to include, that all illegal immigrants should be returned to their country of origin immediately upon being found. No court cases, special needs, asylum, appeals etc. should be entered into. If you're an illegal immigrant, quite simply and quickly, you are deported. The minimum requirements for those seeking legal immigration, should include that they have a permanent job offer in a skilled trade, or intend to set up a business here and can prove that they have the finances in which to do so. Unskilled or semi-skilled workers should be allowed in, only if they have a permanent job offer and only if this country has a shortage of such workers. All immigrants should be required to be able to speak and read English and have no medical problems. The right to apply for UK citizenship, should only be given after a period of 5 years and then only granted if they have not been involved in any unlawful activities. Further more, citizenship can only then be granted if the immigrants country of origin, issues a guarantee to repatriate the immigrant should a UK court rule to revoke the UK citizenship or application. This would eliminate any restrictions on deporting convicted criminals and terrorists on the basis that they would be stateless. The rights, granted at the moment to EU workers, in relation to working in the UK, should be withdrawn, and they should only be eligible, as per our minimum requirements outlined above. Our Aims ContinuedAim Two...To make sure our withdrawal from the EU goes ahead as we want.We do not want a single market, as this will mean freedom of movement to any EU citizens in our country, otherwise our borders will be at risk. We say who comes in and who goes out, thereby enabling us to control our own immigration problem.Aim Three....To repeal or amend the Human Rights Act.To persuade our government to repeal or severely amend the Human Rights Act, especially to delete laws that put the rights of criminals over that of law abiding citizens.Aim Four....Return of our Troops. We seek to persuade our government to immediately withdraw our troops from lands in Middle Eastern countries. The money saved by doing so, should then be used to strengthen our armed forces.Aim Five.....ReligionThe original Knights Templar were formed to protect the rights of Christians. At Knights Templar Organisation-UK we broaden that, to protect the rights of all lawful religions from extremists of any religion. We believe that anyone has the right to follow their particular faith, so long as it does not infringe the rights of other faiths. We seek to help all lawful religions to peacefully co-exist without hindrance. We do not condone unlawful acts or violence towards any religion, or by any religion and will actively support peaceful and lawful means to stop such events occurring. Our five main aims as outlined, are put in simplistic terms, as we are not experts in law, or a political body. We are simply human beings, that see our way of life being eroded and threatened by the concerns that we've outlined. We do know though, that as with most things in life that are done, they can also be undone. It is the task of the Knights Templar Organisation-UK to help protect the rights and the beliefs of the population of the United Kingdom, which after all, is not too far removed from ideals of the original Knights Templar. Our Aims - How do we do itAt the moment our organisation is growing steadily every week (over 2000 as at the time of writing) and membership is scattered around the UK. Right now, we inform our Knights and Dames of any petitions that are around, that are protesting about causes similar to ours and hope they decide to sign them. For a petition to be heard and debated in the House of Commons, it needs to have at least 100,000 signatures, so it's important they get every signature available. A recent successful petition on immigration, attracted some 145,000 signatures and was debated in the House of Commons. Besides publishing these petitions in our monthly newsletter, those members using our private Facebook page, are always sharing many other petitions which may interest you, usually on a more local or personal basis. It's alright to have protest marches etc. but they usually do little or no good. The vast majority of these marches, go largely unreported or mis-reported, cause mayhem in the area in which they take place, cause upset and resentment from residents and motorists and can get the organisation leading them, a bad name or trouble from the law and in general.I can think of one particular far right organisation, who are always begging for donations so that they can fight court cases, bought against them by the authorities. Rather a waste of their members donations, I would have thought. Don't forget 'the media' and especially if they have a little pressure from GCHQ, are superbly able to present the negative aspects of confrontation. In fact, the British public at large, do not like confrontation and it is not the way to win the war, but maybe a 'Fifth Column', attitude is........A Fifth Column AttitudeThe dictionary describes a Fifth Column as one where any group of people, undermine a larger group, such as a nation... from within. In other words, the opposing force, although smaller, can with help from sympathisers within the larger force, spring an element of surprise and win the day.In our case 'within' is you, it's me, it's all of us. Our weapon is 'word of mouth'. By expressing your concerns and our organisation's aims, about our great country to your friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc. you are helping to change peoples attitudes and lethargy, in doing something about our problems and therefore ultimately change the way they vote.If you express your views to those around you, and they tell of the dangers to those around them and so on, then awareness grows quite rapidly and things begin to change, which is exactly what's been happening over these last few years! Look at the rise of political parties, who now represent many of the things, we at the Knights Templar Organisation want. In fact well over 8 million people in the UK, are now actively thinking our way. By using this 'Fifth Column' attitude, those numbers can only grow and are growing. Our war will not be won quickly, because our problems did not appear quickly, they've been smouldering and growing for decades. But with over 8 million minds already thinking our way, we are beginning to win. We expect the Knights and Dames of our organisation to use this 'Fifth Column' attitudeWearing our distinctive badge, patch or cap, can be a good talking point, to bring about discussion on our aims and your concerns, thereby making an enquirer more aware of the dangers facing our beloved British way of life.As our membership grows and for the moment, we advertise membership mainly through PayPerClick on Google and Bing, we are beginning to organise local groups meetings in various areas around the UK. As more such Commanderies, as they are called, are bought into being, we can start to organise more leaflet drops, posters etc. .Our main priority for the time being though, is to attract members or 'raise the army', so to speak. It'll take some time to do, but 'from little acorns, oak trees can grow". And, so do ideas, that members can put forward, to advance our cause.Knights Templar UK | PoliticsThe good thing about a democracy like ours, is the fact that we, the public, are able to vote in the party, that we think would be best running our country. We at the Knights Templar are not a political party and would not tell you how you should vote. That decision is left to you.The Templars Back at LincolnBy KT-UK on 05 July 2020The first of what should have been several sleepouts for various charities that we had planned across the Midlands before the pandemic hit us all came and went on a dry but freezing cold night on the 6 March 2020, when some members of KTUK got together for a Sleep Out at Lincoln Cathedral in aid of the YMCA Homeless Charities. In attendance were Commander of Lincolnshire, Master of England and Commander of Nottinghamshire. We were also joined by our fellow Templar from Scotland Sergeant at Arms from FalkirkWe started the night by arriving and booking in to register by 19.00 and were shown into the area for setting up where we were to sleep and a good selection of cardboard boxes and tape were available for anyone wanting to use them! Whilst we were happily chatting away and getting to know each other and talking Templar History others were busy making cardboard box coffins to settle down in for the night! In the background others were starting to arrive and set up for the night whilst listening to a local musician playing songs. Photos were taken and introductions were made to members of the security team and other members of the YMCA support team.At 20.00 we had an introduction from the YMCA CEO who officially opened the evening and the local priest came across and we joined in prayer. Around 21.00 hot soup and bread was available in the kitchen for anyone that wanted something hot to eat before settling down for the night.Once people had started settling down members of staff and security routinely checked in on everyone to make sure we were all okay and we had a few conversations with members of staff, security and a couple of students who were asking about our order and the history of the Templars in Lincolnshire. We also discussed the fact that the Cathedral was used in the film (The DaVinci Code) in a couple of shots. As the night drew on and the temperature dropped out came the flask with a hot drink in and a few snacks. A few hours later at around 06.00 it was time to rise, wish our neighbours a good morning and start breaking down our sleeping kits for the night and the cardboard put to one side ready for collection later in the day At about 06.45 -07.00 The Mayor of Lincoln and the YMCA CEO attended giving out bacon rolls and hot drinks whilst mingling and giving thanks to all involved. We gave out some flyers and cards with the promise of attending again next year hopefully with a few more members in attendance. It was Just a shame that we could not get into the Knights Templar Chapel on the east side of the Cathedral.Oh well another time, another visit for later in the year hopefully!Good Causes GranthamBy KT-UK on 08 Jan 2020A couple of our Commanders did the charity sleep-out at Grantham House on Friday 6th December and helped raise £392 out of the approximately £6,000 that was raised towards a permanent shelter for the homeless in Grantham. About 30 people took part in the event in the grounds of the National Trust property. The rector of St Wulfram's Church, and partner churches in Grantham have launched ‘Grantham Ark’, which will see churches open their doors during the harshest winter months to those who need shelter and set up a permanent emergency shelter in the town. When asked why they were prepared to sleep out” Their replies were on the same wavelength we have always thought there should never be any homelessness and the governments over the past few years have been letting their people down. Everybody should have a room they can sleep in, we would hate to think I would have to live like this in the foreseeable future."Some doing the sleepout set up their cardboard and canvas shelters in the garden. All those that were spoken to over the night had the same message, that it is important we can raise the issue of homelessness. And we think it's important we experience something of what the homeless can experience first-hand, They said homelessness can happen to anybody. It was also pointed out "Homelessness is a hidden thing. It is not just rough sleepers, it is also those who are sofa surfing, those who don't have anywhere to call home, and it's getting worse." The event was also attended by a few people who are homeless and living on the streets of Grantham. It was brought up that there needs to be more support for single people to get housing. Everybody should be equal."The idea is for the sleep-out to become an annual event and will be much bigger next year with schools and organisations invited to take part watch this space we know of two that will be there and hope to get more of our members involved in the future.3 Peaks Challenge 2019By KT-UK on 08 Jan 2020One of the main objectives of KT-UK is that it strives to support and help as many charitable causes as it can. One of these causes, is Veteran’s Woodcraft, a charity that teaches woodwork to help veterans and farmers overcome trauma and PTSD.Our Master at Arms went to see for himself the work that this charity does and deemed it very worthy of the help of KT-UK. To raise money, he organised a sponsored event, KT-UK’s own version of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge.Over 3 separate weekends arrangements were made to take on 1 peak at a time. We aren’t athletes after all and it was designed to be very inclusive. A lot of research was done by the organisers to ensure a safe and enjoyable event.Notice was given to any members who wish to partake in the event or come and support those who did. Advice was given on appropriate clothing, food and water etc… for the trek and I must say as somebody who took part it was all very professional. The first peak Pen Y Ghant, the second Whernside and the last Ingleborough. The weather wasn’t the greatest but nothing stopped the group of intrepid participants who took part or the supporting well-wishers.I personally hadn’t met any of the other trekkers but we all instantly clicked and formed a bond, not unlike the bond I struck up with brothers in the armed forces. I honestly feel that, that day I made some friendships that will last for many years to come. The pace of the climb was set to the slowest member so that no-one felt uncomfortable or rushed. Plenty of stops were put into the route to allow for photographs, for something to eat and drink, sometimes just to stop, catch our breath and marvel at the beauty around us and just to get to know one another. We supported one another that day on that climb, it was enjoyable but hard as well. When we got to the top a huge feeling of achievement was felt by all and the photos of us smiling at the summit are something im very proud of.The views of this beautiful countryside are incredible and I have an album full of memories. Our guide picked a good route and tested our capabilities, I think it’s fair to say that we weren’t found to be wanting. One of the highlights of the day was the finish, the sheer joy at our achievement and the knowledge that we were about to celebrate at the Ribblehead Station Inn. By the way, a lovely little pub, the food was amazing and the cider really found its mark. So, all in all, our Master at Arms and his wife organised a fun and safe event to raise money for a worthy cause and in doing so forged friendships for some of us, memories that will last a life time and hopefully, as this was a success, set a standard for future events. We raised £ 1147.50 which Veteran’s Woodcraft were very grateful to receive. I as well as others are looking forward to the challenges to come. Some amazing photos from the event (Click them to see full size)Warwick Castle GatheringBy KT-UK on 25 Sep 2019After 700 years Templars return to Warwick Castle......on Sat 26th August 2018 Knights and Dames of the Knights Templar United Kingdom order returned triumphantly to Warwick Castle, led by our Commander for Bedfordshire and our Master of England. On a rain lashed day Knights and Dames of the Order could be seen throughout the Castle which welcomed them with open arms. The KT-UK flag flies proudly in the Castle. One of the dry spots of the day, our Grand Master was there to see tje flag proudly displayed. Well done to everybody who turned out for the event.A Brief History of Warwick CastleThere has been a defensive outpost here on the banks of the River Avon since 978. Warwick Castle dates from 1068 and was commisioned by William the Conqueror as he moved his power north after the Norman Conquest. The Norman structure would have been quite different from the one we see today.A motte and bailey wooden structure was constructed on a hill rising above the River Avon. This area now known as 'The Mound' originally offered the greatest vantage point across the land and therefore was the strongest part of the Castle's defensive system. However, as the time moved on advances in defensive architecture were to dwarf this feature.By 1260 stone had replaced wood as the Gatehouse, corner defensive posts and the main building (now the site of the house) on the riverside wall of the Courtyard were built. By 1400, the huge Guy's and Caesar's Towers and the Barbican had been added. Walls were strengthened and the ditch (not moat) was dug deeper to create a real mediaeval stronghold. If King Richard III had not been killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, the Castle would have probably been made to look even more dominating. Today the small towers in the Northern Wall known as Bear and Clarence are the foundations of what would have been the highest structure of all if they had been completed. It was to be a four cornered Keep built to be secure from internal and external attack. His death halted the work resulting in what we see today. Later as the castle declined in military importance, the main living quarters were converted into a residence of rich and sumptuous style that reflected the wealth and status of its owners. By the 1890s the Earl and his wife were holding lavish parties.Warwick TownThe town of Warwick dates back to 914AD when Ethelfleda (daughter of Alfred the Great) established a defence against the Danish invaders on the banks of the river Avon. The old mediaeval town was restricted from later expansion by a number of common lands all around it such as the Priory, St Nicholas Meadow and the Castle. A great fire in 1694 destroyed many buildings and only a few examples of mediaeval town architecture survived. These are the Guild Hall, Lord Leycester Hospital and of course the Castle.Welcome to Knights Templar-UK
