Why can’t police be charged with reckless driving, and public endangerment in a chase?

As others have noted, this can happen when circumstances call for it, for example Trooper gets probation for causing traffic deaths.More commonly, and in less egregious circumstances, there can be administrative sanctions for individual police personnel and tort liability (money damages) for the department involved. The NIH in A review of police pursuit fatalities in the United States from 1982-2004 concludes thatPolice pursuits results in a small yet significant number of fatal motor vehicular crashes and fatalities. All states should record the total number of police pursuits, pursuit crashes, injuries and fatalities for annual review. The findings in this study have important operational implications for EMS care.More recent journalistic coverage includes The Case for Banning High-Speed Police Chases.

What well-intended but outdated career advice have you heard from Boomers?

Gen-X here.In the current day and age, 2 pieces of Boomer advice should be flushed down the toilet. Before I tell you the two, let me tell you the exceptions to the rule from the Boomer population who aren’t giving this tired and atrocious advice. The exceptions are the Boomer salesman and consultants who are still going strong, selling and driving business. They are few and far between, but if you want to separate the Boomers who you should listen to from the Boomers you ignore for career advice, then pay attention to these two groups. My hats off to them.As for the rest of the Boomers, not in the group above, giving out god awful career advice, let’s review the two worst pieces of advice coming out of Boomer’s mouths right now…Go to college and get a job and it will pay offWork hard and your boss will notice and promote youRegarding going to college, we know the college degree means less and less these days. It’s not guaranteeing a job anymore. And even if it does get you a job, the paltry wage growth and mediocre salaries don’t justify the astronomical expenditures for college. We also know the Trades and even some fast food manager gigs pay more than jobs requiring college degrees. And yet you still hear Boomers jocking college as if it’s some Heavenly path toward riches. Give me a break.Need proof? See the In and Out burger salary for a chain manager as an example. I know truck drivers pulling 120k. With the exception of Ivy Leaguers like Harvard and Yale, where you’re buying into a network, college is near useless. In fact, if I could rewind time, I’d skip college and learn sales, networking, and marketing early so I could master it.Go ask anybody worth 7 figures or more doing well, and they’ll tell you what I’m telling you, the most valuable piece of education they learned came after college. I’m talking about self education and studying under people who make piles of money. Now let’s move to useless Boomer advice number 2….working hard at a corporate job will get you a raise and bonus. First, a bit of history for my Millennial, Gen-X and Gen-Z brothers and sisters reading this.Back in the late 90s, it was a different world in Corporate America. You see, if you took on multiple roles or became a top 20% performance wise, people were getting 30%, 40%, and 50% raises for exceptional performance while playing multiple roles at a job. My credentials for this…22 years in Corporate America with contacts in the big cities like Chicago, New York, L.A., Dallas. All have confirmed this. Now back in the late 90s, the understanding was, if one person did 2, 3, 4 jobs in one, they saved the company a pile of money. So you’d take a percentage of the savings from not hiring another 2–3 employees, and give it to the super star. Everybody wins. You know….how sane and normal business practices should work. Then along came late 2000′s and Corporate America management (Boomers), lost their collective minds. Top performers got raises and bonuses slashed and cost of living became the norm. And around this time, workforce morale went down the toilet. Turnover skyrocketed. Boomers love to blame outsourcing and automating, but that has little to do with it. Because the top performers found a way to integrate and improve that system. Alas, they still got garbage raises and bonuses.Boomers gave the knee jerk garbage advice about working even harder, and maybe, we’ll string that carrot along and give you another 2% for your next annual review. Of course, as we know, this never happens. It’s a ruse, a gimmick designed to string you along while Boomers, mostly unproductive in senior management, sit in their positions and don’t do much while you do the work and they take the credit. Boomers of course, love to glance over this point. Their management take over almost mirrors when Corporate America pay structures went down the toilet. This is not a coincidence by the way.Fast forward to today, and Boomers sit in management positions delaying retirement while telling Gen-X people like me to do everything. All while mentoring younger employees on top of it. And they do this with no intention of promoting anybody. In any other workforce at any other time, Gen-X would be groomed and set up for management or already starting their ascent. However, look around, and you’ll see that’s not the case.Notice my point #2. work hard and your boss, or the person above your boss in charge of signing off on your raise and bonus, who’s most likely a Boomer by the way, will promote you. Laughable. The ruse is on full display….Boomers sit in management positions doing little while Gen-X and Millennials, gets held back. And Boomers tell us to work harder and take on more. But they don’t pay you any more cash for it. It’s laughable. Think of the billions in lost productivity from do nothing management and Gen-X and Millennials jumping ship or just opting out. With the exception of start ups and a few of the high flyer companies, the infections has spread to just about everywhere in Corporate America.Of course, some of us got wise years ago and started the side hustle. And as a sweet piece of payback for lying to us and jerking us around, certain younger generations work on their side business at their day jobs while Boomer management is none the wiser. In fact daylighting, which I wrote about in another Quora post, is at record levels.Daylighters finish their work early and then sneak away to earn on the side. And why not? Things won’t change. So long as we do our work on time, what’s the point of taking on more work? It’s not like Boomer management is going to reward us financially. So, we do our part in the Corporate cog. And when the work is done, we sneak away to earn even more on the side.Of course, when Boomer management hears this, they say, “Oh, that’s immoral working on your business on company time.” Right, but purposely holding high performers back while you sit on your ass doing nothing in management isn’t? Give me a break. And while I’m Gen-X and have seen the near criminal behavior towards us in the workforce, I can’t even imagine what Millennials are going through. I cringe to think how nauseous Millennials get when they get Boomer advice on careers and college.P.S. - If you want to continue the conversation, let’s connect on LinkedIn.

What part of the California driving booklet should I study?

All of it. Seriously. I review it annually to avoid tickets when things change. (And they do!)To get a driver's license in California the first time you will have to pass a test of the contents of booklet. You may have to take the test again when you renew as well. (Depending on your driving record and age. )
