As someone with an IQ higher than average, what have you learned about our reality? What is it like to be you with a high IQ ? What interesting thought came out of those hours invested inside your mind?

I do have a higher IQ which apparently affects my perception of reality more than I necessarily realize. I am a lot more analytical than the average person. I do have insatiable curiosity. I do read more than the average person and I have a habit of asking a lot of questions which fortunately many folks are kind enough to answer.A few months ago I was out walking in my neighbourhood and saw a man delivering gravel. I stood back and watched a bit. He stopped his forklift and said I could pass. I said I was interested in seeing how he was doing his work, please continue. He looked so surprised because he had assumed I was going to complain about the fact that the area was pretty blocked or the noise. I watched a bit and learnt a few things. He became more intrigued that I was paying such close attention and we started to talk. He offered to let ME drive his forklift and unload a bin. I was tempted but said I feared if I did something wrong his boss would be very unhappy with the both of us. He said what he did was very simple and it would be hard to have a problem. I said I disagreed. I noted I could see he had a narrow window in which to hook the pallet and it had to be adjusted within a certain range or the contents would be unbalanced and spill and if a bad enough job were done you could indeed most likely flip the forklift. He looked shocked. He admitted that what I said was true but had not expected anyone to figure that out. He said that there had been a new recruit at the gravel pit who DID flip a forklift and the other operators all howled with laughter and wanted to figure out how he managed to do that. I said I assumed that there was uneven terrain at the pit and that if he had a sufficiently heavy load in a very unbalanced position that the center of gravity would be off enough that it could flip if an obstacle were hit at sufficient speed. I said his job was harder than it looked and probably than he remembered from when he trained. He had me come over and check out the controls of the forklift and explained some other things about his job. Very possibly some day that knowledge may be handy to have. I find heavy machinery rather fascinating—have spent some time at construction sites as well. He had a different experience because apparently most people don’t speak to “labourers” and have no interest in their work. He said I had made his day, “No not just my day, my month. No one ever talks TO me, they just complain AT me.”I think that is a good example of what it is like to be me. I just like to learn and understand things, even though they’re not in my area. As I look at issues, I research, and I develop solutions. Sadly, most of the solutions I have are for significant problems and people are not willing to put in the effort to consider alternatives OR if they get it, they are afraid of the ramifications from the powers that be, which is understandable. When my thoughts are on a far smaller scale, I fear my focus on offering improvements can come across in a way I don’t mean for it to sound.I’ve known the most amazing man I’ve ever met for a bit over a year in a professional capacity. He runs his own business and because I think constantly about all manner of things inevitably I thought about some ideas that I thought might be helpful to him. I did write something up and went to talk to him briefly. I did start out saying there was no one I respected more, which is true. I also said that I realized he did not NEED my help and he said that was right. Still I did go on and offered the suggestion and he did listen and think it over. He knew of a problem with the idea and told me. I had a solution to the problem, but as he had not been too happy I felt with what I had suggested, I let it pass, feeling badly that I had probably offended him, which is something I would never want to do. Then he said, “But I appreciate it. Keep thinking.” At some point I may mention the work-around to the objection he had but there are other things going on now as it is holiday season. He reacted far better to what MANY would perceive apparently as a form of insult than I had any reason to hope. (I am unsure of his income but I know something of his expenses so had a good idea and it seemed a shame to not mention it to him.)I compare that with another man who moved here recently and was telling the six folks who showed up for something free he offered how he wanted to expand his business. I took him at his word and thought of something and sent him an email saying that the next month when he had another free presentation if he liked I could bring some information to him. I was clear I did not want to turn this into a job for me but would be appreciative if he’d consider putting out a friend of mine’s business cards. (That friend was in a related area but not competitive and is brilliant at what he does. He also had no idea I was going to make that request. I never just dump someone’s cards on another.)I ended up being “disinvited” from the next month’s presentation in that I received no email invitation. A few months later when we were at a function, he ignored me when I said hello. So he took the OFFER to suggest a few specifics to a REQUEST HE MADE of all six of us as something to be offended by!I did not see that coming as I expect people to not ask for help they have no interest in receiving. The poor other professional MAN has never asked me to do ANYTHING for him and he has a LOT of education and experience in his field so he IS successful already. I just foresee some massive expenses coming up and it seemed practical to mention the idea. However, as his character is outstanding though I probably DID inadvertently make it sound like I was going to “fix” something for him, he did realize that’s just ME. Probably one of the perils from having taught for so long. So we remain on good terms and for all I know when the time is right and I mention the work around, he may think it is something he would like to consider doing. Could be months before I mention it to him as I do try to NOT create pressure and I only see him every few weeks so won’t know if there will be a time it would make sense to raise the subject.I did not tell either man that in another job I had that the doctor made a request of me to come up with an “efficiency” plan and I did as a favour to him. I gave it to his back office supervisor who read it. She and I were on good terms and she called me up that night and said she had hardly been able to stop roaring with laughter after she’d read my short report for the doctor. She told me, the doctor paid her husband $500 to do what I did for free. Her husband was an executive at a major firm, so that was a favour to the doctor to charge only $500. She said she had pulled up HIS report and mine and not only had I covered EVERYTHING her executive husband had said but I had a few other ideas because I actually WORKED there and also knew the people involved. She said she’d shown my report to her husband and he’d been impressed. So there ARE places for my talents but I failed to market them. It was good to know that a top level exec in a field other than mine had come to the same conclusions—showed I was not just an “academic.” I was not surprised as I worked in assorted fields while teaching and often came up with solutions for issues though it was never in my job description. That’s just the way my mind works. If I had more sense I probably could have been rich. We’ll just see what becomes of my books. That probably will be the best fit: researched logical ideas read by people who are INTERESTED in the answer instead of having it popped on them out of the blue.
