How much has Canada changed since 1995?

Human rights‘This is not the Canada I once knew.” Those were the words of a British member of the UN Human Rights Committee who was taking part this week in the committee’s first review of Canada’s human rights record in 10 years.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/a-sobering-look-at-canadas-human-rights-record/article25405839/?service=mobileAnd respect for human rights isn't the only that has changed in the past decade. The EconomyIn 1993, Jean Chretien was two years into his ten year Prime Ministerial span as Leader of the federal Liberal Party of Canada. Paul Martin was Finance Minister. Their strategic direction for the economy was already starting to bear fruit, with improvement in many indicators. By the time Chretien and Martin stopped being the economic dynamic duo, Canada's economy was better than it had been for decades, with better employment, no deficits and lower debit. Then Harper and his Conservative Party took over and undid many of the good things, leading to greater deficits, an absurd and a-scientific focus on the oil sands above intellectual innovation and removal of research and regulation which protected the environment required for good economic health. Now that oil has slumped, the flaws in Harper's strategic direction are obvious to all.Political DiscourseIn 1995, it would have been impossible to imagine a federal political party using a terrorist snuff film as part of a campaign attack ad. In 2015, Harper's Conservative Party did exactly that, using an ISIS video of people being drowned to attack the leader of the federal Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau. Harper's Conservative Party has not only led the way on economic idiocy, they've led the way on vicious, ugly and deeply partisan politics as well.Ontario Air QualityIn 1995, the Golden Horseshoe from Hamilton through Toronto to Oshawa was deeply polluted, with ugly smog, much of which was due to burning coal for energy. Thanks to the Liberal Party of Ontario's bold leadership, in 2015 coal plants in Ontario are completely eliminated, the first jurisdiction in the world to be able to make that claim, there is a lot more renewable energy and the air is much, much cleaner.Out-of-the-closet PoliticiansIn 1995, it would have been difficult to imagine a major provincial or federal party being led to victory by an openly gay leader. In 2013, Kathleen Wynne, who is not only openly gay but also married to her partner, led the Liberal Party of Ontario to a majority government, with the people of Ontario resoundingly approving the growth of renewables, the elimination of coal and the progressive policies of the Liberal Party.Gay MarriagePart of that is gay marriage acceptance in Canada. In 1995 it wasn't legal. In 2005, Canada became the fourth country in the world and the first outside of Europe to have gay marriage become fully legally accepted at the federal level. Paul Martin's minority government introduced the Civil Marriage Act and it was passed in June 2005. Harper's Conservatives upon taking power immediately tried to get rid of the Act, and were voted down in a free vote in Parliament.Legislation and the ConstitutionIn 1995, the Chretien-led Liberal government of Canada was aligned in its strategies and policies with the Constitution Act of 1867 through 1982 including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In 2015, the Harper Conservative government has received a stunning series of losses at the Supreme Court of Canada for its consistent attempts to pass legislation which is unconstitutional, against the law of the land and the majority views of Canada: prostitution, mandatory minimum sentence for gun crimes, assisted suicide, aboriginal title, time served sentencing, senate reform and ineligible Supreme Court nominee Marc Nadon.Global PerceptionIn 1995, Canada was positively viewed globally as a leading country, one which punched above its weight and led on issues related to global governance and peace keeping. In 2015, under the Harper Conservatives, Canada is widely known as one of the primary hindrances to action on climate change, for selling arms to Saudi Arabia and for fighting wars, not fighting for peace. Our reputation has been squandered.Demographic DataIn 1995, Canadians, every level of government and researchers had the information that they needed about Canada's demographics to do their basic jobs due to the mandatory long form census. In June of 2010, against the advice of pretty much everybody with a brain, the Harper Conservatives eliminated the mandatory survey. The results are that subsequent survey data is of such poor quality that it is relatively useless for most levels of government. There's more, but I suspect you understand the point.

If a cab driver makes more money than an IT professional, why should I study?

I have driven Golden Taxi and Blue & White in Mississauga, Ontario for the two years 2004 and 2005 so I feel i'm experienced enough to answer this one.I went to univesity 1999-2003 and I dropped out. I too had visions of grandeur about taxi driving, about being my own boss and making a killing doing it. I couldn't have been wrong-er.Even though I was only 24 when I did it, and not out of necessity, my experience driving taxi is the same as most taxi drivers. The numbers (from 10 years ago) are as follows:The car costs $10,000 which I cannot afford so I rent. The taxi medallion (plate) costs $150,000 OR buy from the city for $5000+20 year wait, either of which I do not have so I rent. The above two can be rented together for $400 a week for night shift and $500 a week for day shift from individuals or companies who have already acquired a car and medallion.Driving taxi is like a running a shop. Weather you do any business or not, you still have to pay rent and other expenses. So every week you start with a $600 deficit. Rent plus $100 gas for the week ($600) takes 3 days (36 hours of driving around) to cover up. The other 4 days you work to cover other expenses (testing, licensing, time lost for car repairs, breaks, lunches, rough customers who walk away without paying etc, sick days, traffic tickets) + your own take-home. For every day that you're off of the 4 days you're losing out on 25% of your take home.Day shift generally starts at 4 am and ends at 4 pm. Night shift goes 4 pm to 4 am. 7 days a week. There are no days off. Just like when you're running a shop you don't shut it down or you lose money.Taxi driving is perfect for immigrants who may be educated and qualified to be doctors but their qualifications are not valid in North America (surprisingly those same qualifications are the basis of immigration). When you have lots of time on your hands, you don't have any local qualifications and you have mouths to feed - you resort to taxi driving at the expense of giving up any free time or any form of a life. Also the fare you pay to the taxi driver includes HST (sales tax). The driver, just like any business owner, has to pay that HST to the government (minus expenses). Plus other corporate taxes. At the end of the day it all boils down to working 84 hours a week at minimum wage, with a ton of added risks.Risks:The average person drives 10-15 hours a week. Taxi drivers drive minimum 84 hours a week. That's a 500% more chance of getting into collisions and seriously hurting themselves. Especially night shift drivers because of the amount of drunk drivers on the road. In the two years I drove I got robbed at knife point twice and had about 8 people who ran on me without paying their fare. After all the hard work you put in it really f'n hurts. There is no glamour in driving a taxi. Get an education and get a proper job. That's what I did.

What are the most fascinating science facts?

Caution: Pictorial answer here-There is a moon out there, very similar to earth. It comprises of oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains and a hydrological cycle (rain cycle).“Then why is Elon Musk planning his colony on Mars?”, you may ask.The only teeny tiny problem is that all the lakes, rivers, oceans and even rains are of Methane and ethane. The name of the moon is Titan (not where Thanos is from). It is a natural satellite of Saturn.A day on Titan may look like this. You could fly in its skyTitan’s thick atmosphere, low gravity (less than our Moon) and reasonable surface pressure (50% of Earth’s) mean that, by flapping a pair of wings strapped to your arms, you could fly in its skies with no more effort than walking. It’s the only other world with liquid (that we know of)Aside from Earth, Titan is the only world we know of that has liquids on its surface. These are in the form of lakes and rivers composed of liquid hydrocarbons including Ontario Lacus, a lake 240 kilometer (150 mile) long in Titan’s southern hemisphere. It has a climate system like EarthThe liquids on Titan undergo a similar cycle to water here on Earth. Liquid methane evaporates from the surface, forming extremely thick clouds in the skies, before eventually raining down and replenishing the lakes and rivers on the ground. We’ve landed on it, and we will againThe Saturn-orbiting spacecraft Cassini carried with it the Huygens probe, which landed on Titan (our only landing in the outer Solar System) on 14 January 2005. There are proposals being discussed for another landing, this time possibly using a boat.References: Space FactIf you want questions like this one in your feed then follow me by clicking here
